The song "Oldman War song" and the Poem "Remember a Time"
were both inspired by the passing of my Grandfather in the early 90's.
I went to his funeral with my father. The room bare and simple.
As a young teenager it felt very plain for a funeral.
I guess I was expecting some grand display or something.
Not sure. There was a little tape player that was cued to play "Taps".
As we sat there paying our respects a group of older people came in the the room,
dressed in there military finest. These were all the commrades of my Grandpa.
People that fought with him in the war. They lined up one by one to "pay they're respects.
To salute and morn" (quote from the poem Remember a time)
I got a shiver down my spine on that day.
I think when I had the first chance I wrote the Poem.
Many things were realized and instilled in me that day.
The fact that everyone one that is free in North America, Europe,
and other places aswell are free for a reaseon.
These men and women that gave lives everyday for years and years in WW2 and WW1
and all the wars that have followed. It was a battle back then to stop world domination.
I have found that people and communitys all over the world came together as one to fight.
My day job is renovating bathrooms, and the one blessing in disguise is that
I get to hear different story's from different poeple. They get to tell me
( an other wise nobody) about the war from their view.
Wether it was the little girl in England (now an elderly women)
that remembers driving by the light of carpet bomb explosions so they would not be seen.
To the lady that worked in the control room for Winston ChurchHill.
(she had a painting that she did of this room and pointed to herself in that paniting beside Winston himself.)
Then close to home my Grandpa who was a bombardier in the 98th Anti-tank Battery.
We cannot forget that these people have to remember every morning the events of the war for them.
Wether it be on the ground fighting, in the air,
at home getting that letter from the military saying your loved one wont be coming home.
These memory's are with them forever. They did it all for us and the generations that follow.
I feel fourtunate to have this opprtunity to meet these
people who reiterate why we are free and why we should never forget.
It is my duty and all of ours to make sure this never gets lost.
Youth today have it very easy so it is also easy to forget.
Oldman War song is my way to have this information travel from old through to young,
as a conduite passing information on.
Make time for silence this Rememberance Day.
Thank you.

lyrics

REMEMBER REMEMBER REMEMBER A TIME
WHEN BLOOD WAS AS COMMON AS MUSICAL RYHME
FEAR AND DESPERATION WAS THE TALK OF THE TOWN
AND ALL THE GIRLS SAT WITH A FROWN

REMEMBER REMEMBER REMEMBER THE DEAD
HOW THE PLATOON IN OUR COUNTRY WAS LEAD
WALKING AND KNOWING THEY MIGHT TOUCH THE HAND
OF DEATH HIMSELF THE ONE WHO CHRISTENED THIS LAND

AND I REMEMBER SCHOOL DAYS
STANDING IN SILENCE MY MIND IN A HAZE
I DIDNT KNOW AND NEITHER DID YOU
BUT WE ALWAYS DID WHAT THEY TOLD US TO DO

NOT SO LONG AGO ONE OF MINE
AN ELDER YOU SEE WHO FOUGHT IN THAT TIME
HIS COMMRADS GATHERED IN A LINEAR FORM
TO PAY THEIR RESPECTS
TO SALUTE AND MORN

THE TRUMPETS CRIED THEIR TEARS BY NOTE
THE PEOPLE SIGHED THEIR ARMS AT ATTENTION
ONE BY ONE THEY APPROACHED HIS HEAVEN
TO SAY GOODBYE AND REMEMBER A TIME
